Notes for your next cup
Chinese Tea Craft & Makers
The finished leaf is a record of decisions. Picking, withering, handling, oxidation, firing, pressing and storage shape different paths from a tea plant to a cup.
Read processing through the tea family
| Family | A useful processing distinction | What to compare in the cup |
|---|---|---|
| Green tea | Processing preserves a fresher leaf character. | Fresh aroma, body and the effect of water temperature. |
| White tea | Withering and drying shape the starting material. | Leaf style, format and the effect of storage. |
| Oolong | Handling, oxidation and roast vary across styles. | Fragrance, roast and the finish over repeated pours. |
| Black tea | Oxidation is central to the style. | Malty, fruity or floral directions in the actual tea. |
| Pu-erh and dark tea | Processing and storage follow different routes. | Raw or ripe style, compression and individual storage history. |

Roast, fragrance and added ingredients
A fragrance word can describe the tea itself. It does not always mean a flower was added. Compare an osmanthus-fragrance Dancong with a blend whose ingredients actually include osmanthus. The names may sound similar while describing different products.
The oolong collection is a useful place to compare those distinctions. With floral blends, read the tea base and the added ingredient together, rather than treating the flower as the whole drink.

Pressing changes the handling
A cake, tuocha, brick or pearl needs a different preparation step from loose leaf. Compression does not supply a tea’s ingredients or processing category on its own. A black tea mini cake remains black tea; a white tea pearl remains white tea.
Separate a measured portion where needed and allow the leaf room to open. The pressed tea guide and brewing workshop show how to approach those forms.

Ask a precise question about a maker or batch
A maker’s name, a production date, an award or a certification needs to refer to the exact product and relevant batch. A general story about a region cannot supply missing information about every tea sold under that regional name.
If you need a particular origin detail, pack label or batch record, ask about the listing you are considering. Our family tea story explains the background to The Tea Pure; it is separate from documentary information for an individual purchase.
