The Panchen Lama's Favorite: Xiaguan's Treasured Tight Tea

Baoyan Brand: Where Tibetan Buddhism Meets Yunnan Tea

Dali, Yunnan, located in the central part of western Yunnan, has been a transportation hub, commercial center, and a gathering place for tea distribution in western and southern Yunnan since ancient times. As early as the Nanzhao Kingdom of the Tang Dynasty, tea from Xishuangbanna, Simao, and other places was already being transported and sold in Dali. Since the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China period, Xiaguan has become the largest tea trading, production, and processing center in southwestern China. Tea from the main tea-producing areas of Yunnan (such as Xishuangbanna, Simao, Lincang, Baoshan, and other places) has been continuously transported to Xiaguan for processing and sale.

Xiaguan Tuocha belongs to the category of compressed Pu-erh tea. Its processing evolution originated from the "Pu-erh Tuan Tea" of the Ming Dynasty and the "Daughter Tea" of the Qing Dynasty. In 1902, it was successfully standardized by the "Yongchangxiang" merchant house in Xiaguan, and it has since had a history of over a hundred years.

Baoyan Brand tight tea, also known as "Ox-heart tea," "heart tight tea," or "mushroom tuo," is one of the oldest traditional teas in Yunnan Province, China.

The "Baoyan Brand" trademark includes many Buddhist elements, reflecting profound Tibetan Buddhism cultural characteristics, and showing great respect for Tibetan Buddhist culture in the process of cultural integration. The 10th Panchen Lama, who was born in the Tibetan area of Qinghai, has always had a special fondness for Xiaguan's tight tea and has been very concerned about the situation of this traditional tea product. In October 1986, during his inspection in Dali, the Panchen Lama made a special trip to Xiaguan Tea Factory for an inspection.

In anticipation of the arrival of the 10th Panchen Lama, Erdeni Qoji Zhan, Xiaguan Tea Factory meticulously crafted a batch of heart-shaped compressed teas as a tribute. Since the 10th Panchen Lama wished to revive the production of the discontinued heart-shaped compressed tea, which was well-known as "Ox-heart tea," it began to be referred to as "Panchen Tuocha" or "Panchen Tuo" by people. After the inspection, the Panchen Lama gladly inscribed the name of the factory in Tibetan script, "Yunnan Xiaguan Tea Factory."

Twenty years after the 10th Panchen Lama's visit to Xiaguan Tea Factory, in 2006, the 11th Panchen Lama Erdeni Qoji Jigme also inspected the company and personally inscribed the words "Generations of Tea Affinity, Tibetan-Han Amity."

Xiaguan Tuocha continues the classic heart-shaped compressed tea form, meticulously crafted from specially selected premium large-leaf varieties of sun-dried green tea from major mountain regions like Iceland and Jingmai, blended with aged materials that have been matured for many years — a remarkable creation known as the "Generational Tea Bond Tuocha."
